Wurno Chairman Raises Fresh Alarm as Over 100 Residents Remain in Bandits’ Captivity

The Chairman of Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Alhaji Abba Isa Sadiq Achida, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the area, disclosing that more than 100 residents are currently in captivity following repeated bandit attacks.

Speaking to journalists in Sokoto, the chairman said fear has gripped many communities, forcing residents to abandon their homes at night and seek refuge in safer locations. He revealed that thousands of people now troop into Achida town every evening to sleep in schools and other available shelters, returning to their villages during the daytime.

According to him, attacks by armed bandits have become almost a daily occurrence in parts of Wurno, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property and widespread displacement.

“The people no longer sleep with their two eyes closed”he said, lamenting the emotional and psychological hardship residents now face.

The Council Chair also raised concerns over the role of suspected informants aiding criminal groups, but noted that local communities have began working closely with security agencies by sharing intelligence and organizing vigilante support.

He further stated that gunmen frequently block major roads at night, especially during market days around Achida and Goronyo, worsening the security threat.

While acknowledging efforts by the Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu to improve safety, the chairman appealed for stronger federal and state intervention, including the establishment of a military base in Achida and additional police divisions in Achida, Kwargaba, Chacho and other vulnerable communities

He added that the council has already commenced renovation of the Achida Police Outpost.

Responding to the concerns, Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, assured residents that security agencies are intensifying efforts to restore peace across the area.
