Federation Cup Shock: Sokoto United Knock Out Defending Champions Kwara United

The Round of 32 of the 2026 Federation Cup produced a series of surprises and thrilling contests across the country, with defending champions Kwara United suffering a shock exit at the hands of Sokoto United.
Sokoto United emerged as one of the biggest stories of the round after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the title holders to book their place in the last 16.
Several fixtures were decided through penalty shootouts as teams battled fiercely for progression. Adamawa United advanced after defeating Sapele Lions 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw, while El-Kanemi Warriors edged past Akwa United 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate.
Former champions Bendel Insurance recorded a convincing 3-1 victory over Crown FC, while Kada Warriors knocked out Shooting Stars SC 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Elsewhere, Wikki Tourists defeated Bayelsa United 3-1, and Bida Lions overcame Warri Wolves 2-0. Flight FC also progressed after beating Mighty Jets FC 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
One of the most entertaining matches of the round saw Rivers United defeat reigning NPFL champions Enugu Rangers 3-2 in a pulsating encounter.
Nasarawa United advanced by walkover after Ejigbo City failed to honour their fixture, while Plateau United edged Kogi United 1-0.
In another dramatic contest, FC Basira defeated Ingas FC 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Ikorodu City FC continued their impressive campaign with a 2-0 victory over Jigawa Golden Stars, while Enyimba FC secured a narrow 1-0 win against Gombe United.
Youthful side Sunshine Stars U19 impressed with a 2-1 victory over Warinje FC, while Barau FC completed the Round of 32 with a disciplined 1-0 triumph over Abakaliki FC.
