BREAKING: Senate Begins Clause-by-Clause Vote on State Police Constitutional Amendment

The Senate on Wednesday commenced manual voting on the proposed constitutional amendment seeking the establishment of state police across Nigeria.

Lawmakers are considering the bill on a clause-by-clause basis as part of the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, marking a crucial step in the legislative process.

The proposal is aimed at decentralising policing powers and strengthening security efforts by allowing states to establish and manage their own police forces alongside the Nigeria Police Force.

Several top government officials were present in the Senate chamber to witness the proceedings, including the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as the governors of Uba Sani, Dapo Abiodun, and Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

If approved by the National Assembly and subsequently ratified by the required number of state Houses of Assembly, the amendment would provide the constitutional framework for the creation of state-controlled police forces.

More details to come….
