Sokoto, 32 Other States Brace for Severe Flooding in 2026

Nigeria is preparing for a widespread flooding in 2026, with more than 30,000 communities across the country identified as being at risk, according to the latest Annual Flood Outlook.

The report indicates that 14,118 communities in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory fall within high risk flood zones, while 15,597 are classified as moderate risk and 923 as low risk raising fresh concerns over the country’s disaster preparedness.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening emergency response systems and promoting sustainable development to mitigate the impact of flooding nation wide.

Represented by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the president said the government has reviewed existing challenges affecting disaster management and acknowledged the critical role played by rescue and emergency response teams.

He added that efforts are ongoing to strengthen relevant ministries and agencies to ensure faster, more coordinated, and effective responses to flood emergencies.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the increasing frequency and intensity of flooding, which experts link to climate change, poor urban planning, and inadequate drainage infrastructure.

Authorities have urged residents in flood prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere to early warning advisories as part of broader efforts to reduce potential loss of lives and property.
