Seven Sokoto PDP Lawmakers Defect to ADC
The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Tuesday resumed plenary after a 32-day recess, with eight lawmakers announcing their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party PDP.
The sitting, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, marked the formal reopening of legislative activities. The Majority Leader, Hon. Muhammad Bello Idris Gwadabawa North Constituency, moved a motion for the resumption of plenary, which received unanimous approval from members.
During the session, the Speaker conveyed condolences to the Government and people of Kebbi State, particularly members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, over the death of their Speaker, praying for strength for the bereaved and mercy for the deceased.
A major highlight of the plenary was the announcement of the defection of eight PDP lawmakers. Hon. Muhammad Mas’ud, representing Shagari Constituency, defected to the All Progressives CongressAPC, while seven others joined the African Democratic Congress ADC.
Those who moved to the ADC include Hon. Abubakar Magaji (Bodinga North),Hon. Habibu Halilu Modachi (Isa), Hon. Atiku Liman Gande (Silame), Hon. Awaisu M. Aliyu (Gada West), Hon.Bashar Isah Jabo (Tambuwal East), Hon. Nasiru Adamu (Goronyo), and Hon. Buhari Haliru (Sokoto North I).
The lawmakers attributed their defection to internal divisions within the PDP, citing constitutional provisions that permit such action under certain conditions.
The House adjourned sitting to Wednesday, April 8, 2026, after concluding deliberations on the day’s agenda.
