Serve People Faithfully, Uphold Truth – Sultan Urges Newly Turbaned Title Holders

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on newly turbaned traditional title holders in Sokoto to uphold honesty, accountability and selfless service in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The Sultan, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), gave the charge during a turbaning ceremony held at his palace on Saturday, June 6, 2026, where 15 individuals were honoured with various traditional titles.

Addressing the appointees, the monarch stressed the importance of speaking the truth to leaders at all times, including himself, noting that it is part of their duty to guide leadership whenever necessary.

“Always tell us the truth. Whenever we go astray, help bring us back on the right path because that is part of your responsibility,” the Sultan said.

He further explained that leaders must also be willing to justify their decisions when necessary, saying, “If you insist and we do not retreat from a mission, we will explain the reasons behind our decision.”

The Sultan described the title holders as ambassadors of the Sultanate who must dedicate themselves to the welfare and service of the people.

Among those turbaned were Umaru S. Abubakar III as Sarkin Arewan Sokoto, Alhaji Haliru S. Abubakar III as Janjunan Sokoto, Alhaji Ya’u Aliyu as Dikkon Sokoto, and Alhaji Aliyu Suleiman as Bunun Sokoto.

Others include Mu’azu Bello Maiwurno as Wakilin Ayukkan Daular Usmaniyyah, Ahmad Rufa’i Na Dange as Sarkin Tsabta, Alhaji Abdullahi Dan Azumi as Barayan Sarkin Musulmi, Bello Ibrahim Gusau as Sarkin Malammai, Abbas Abba Aminu as Sarkin Shariffai, and Almustafa Mazuga as Mazugan Sarkin Musulmi.

Also turbaned were Ubangari as Zagin Sarkin Musulmi, Nura Umar as Dangaladiman Zagin Sarkin Musulmi, Alhaji Kabiru Maibulo as Sarkin Tamburra, Usman Abdullahi Mustafa as Muhtasibin Sokoto, and Alhaji Shehu Zubairu Tela as Danmalikin Sokoto.

The event attracted dignitaries including the representative of the Sokoto State Governor and Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Dadi Adare, representatives of the Emirs of Gwandu and Argungu, members of the Sultanate Council, kingmakers and other prominent personalities.
