ADC Blasts Onanuga, Says Tinubu Government Is Out of Touch With Nigerians’ Hardship
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga over his recent remarks on the state of the economy, describing them as insensitive and evidence that the APC-led Federal Government is disconnected from the realities facing ordinary Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said Onanuga’s comments amounted to a “startling admission” of how detached the government has become from the daily struggles of citizens.
According to the opposition party, millions of Nigerians are battling rising food prices, transportation costs, school fees and declining purchasing power, insisting that the hardship being experienced across the country is real and not exaggerated.
The ADC argued that the current cost-of-living crisis is the result of what it described as “ill-conceived and poorly executed economic policies” introduced by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, adding that the policies have pushed more Nigerians into poverty since the government assumed office.
The party further stated that a responsible government should assess the impact of its policies by engaging with ordinary citizens rather than relying on the experiences of those within official circles.
While acknowledging that the government often points to road infrastructure projects as achievements, the ADC maintained that such projects do not address the immediate economic challenges confronting Nigerians.
“Nigerians cannot eat roads,” the statement said, stressing that the primary responsibility of any government is to create conditions that enable citizens to afford food, secure jobs, run businesses and live with dignity.
The party also claimed that after three years in office, life has become more difficult for many Nigerians than it was when the administration took office, arguing that the government has failed to meet this fundamental responsibility.
The ADC called on the Tinubu administration to acknowledge the consequences of its economic policies and accept responsibility for what it described as “historic failures,” warning that dismissive comments from government officials would only reinforce the perception that the APC government is out of touch with the people.
