The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has notified Resident Electoral Commissioners across the country of the commencement of political party primaries ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a notice dated May 11, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the electoral body said the primaries would cover the nomination of candidates for the presidential, governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly elections.

The commission directed Resident Electoral Commissioners in all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory to make adequate arrangements for the monitoring of the exercises in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, the 1999 Constitution as amended, and INEC regulations and guidelines.

INEC also disclosed that political parties had submitted their timetables and schedules of activities for the primaries, noting that the schedules could be updated from time to time when necessary.

With this development, INEC has indicated it’s continued recognition with David Mark led African Democratic Congress ADC faction with its readiness for the conduct of the primaries on the same date as the Mark led faction has slated for the primaries of the ADC.

In a related development the commission also continues to recognize Wike led PDP as an authentic PDP faction of the opposition party.

The notice signals the formal commencement of preparations by political parties and the electoral umpire ahead of the 2027 polls.
