PLAC Launches Guide on Public Interest, Human Rights Litigation in Abuja
The Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) has officially launched its Guide on Public Interest and Human Rights Litigation in Nigeria during a stakeholders’ event held in Abuja.
The event brought together members of the judiciary, legislature, legal practitioners and civil society groups to discuss the role of litigation in promoting human rights, accountability and access to justice across the country.
Executive Director of PLAC, Clement Nwankwo, said the guide is designed to equip lawyers and civil society organisations with practical tools to effectively pursue public interest litigation.

He expressed confidence that the publication would help strengthen human rights protection and support timely justice delivery in Nigeria.
The programme was chaired by Justice Emmanuel Agim, Justice of the Supreme Court, who emphasized the judiciary’s critical role in safeguarding fundamental rights and improving access to justice for citizens.

Also in attendance was Chairman House of Representatives’ Committee on Human Rights, Hon. Peter Makinde, who reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to legal and institutional reforms that protect citizens’ rights and promote accountability.

Similarly, Hon. Victor Obuzor, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Civil Society Organisations and Development Partners, highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between government institutions and civil society in advancing human rights.

Participants at the event stressed the growing importance of public interest litigation in addressing systemic injustices, deepening democratic governance and ensuring justice for vulnerable groups.

The newly launched guide is expected to serve as a practical resource for lawyers, advocates and organisations seeking to use the courts as a tool for advancing public interest and human rights in Nigeria.
