FG Pushes Back on Collapse Claims, Says Nigeria Making Progress
The Federal Government has dismissed claims that Nigeria is on the verge of collapse, affirming that the country is making steady progress in addressing its security and economic challenges.
Speaking at the 81st General Assembly and 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described such claims as misleading and overly pessimistic.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, the minister stressed that Nigeria remains resilient despite ongoing difficulties.
He noted that coordinated military operations and improved intelligence-sharing have led to the neutralisation of bandits and a reduction in attacks, particularly in northern parts of the country. According to him, these efforts are gradually weakening criminal networks and restoring stability, while rapid-response strategies are being strengthened nationwide to protect lives and property.
On the economic front, Idris highlighted signs of recovery, pointing to improved foreign reserves and increased revenue from both oil and non-oil sectors. He attributed these developments to ongoing reforms focused on transparency and fiscal discipline.
The minister also referenced Nigeria’s recent reclassification as a Frontier Market by FTSE Russell, describing it as a positive signal to international investors and evidence of improved market conditions.
Addressing media professionals, Idris urged broadcasters to remain responsible and avoid spreading narratives that could create division, especially as the country approaches another election period. He emphasized that the media must uphold professionalism and contribute to national unity.
While reaffirming the government’s commitment to press freedom, he called for stronger collaboration between the media and public institutions to tackle misinformation and promote national cohesion.
The minister further commended BON for its role in maintaining ethical standards in broadcasting and assured Nigerians that the government will continue to pursue reforms aimed at strengthening security and driving economic growth.
