Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for an urgent overhaul of global governance structures and international financial institutions to make them more representative, equitable and responsive to contemporary economic and demographic realities.

Shettima made the call while delivering an address on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ongoing 2026 BRICS Summit in India.

The Vice President said Nigeria remained committed to supporting institutions that better reflect the changing realities of the global economy and the demographic composition of the international community.

According to him, BRICS has continued to amplify the voice of the Global South while advancing the push for a more inclusive international order.

“BRICS amplifies the voice of the Global South and advances a more inclusive international order,” Shettima said.

He stressed the need for reforms that would ensure global institutions respond effectively to the interests and aspirations of emerging economies.

Shettima also used the opportunity to invite international investors to explore Nigeria’s growing investment opportunities, describing the country as a strategic gateway to Africa’s expanding market.

He urged foreign investors to take advantage of the opportunities available in Nigeria, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“View Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s expanding market under the African Continental Free Trade Area,” he said.

The Vice President reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to a fairer and more inclusive multilateral system, saying the country would continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening global cooperation and representation.
