Jonathan Says He’ll Consult Widely Before Deciding on 2027 Presidency
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said contesting for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027 is a serious decision that cannot be approached lightly, following growing calls from youth groups urging him to return to the race.
Jonathan made the remarks on Thursday while receiving delegations of youth groups at his office in Abuja, where they appealed to him to contest the next presidential election.
Responding to the request, the former president said he would consult broadly before making any decision, stressing that leadership requires deep reflection and national consensus.
According to him, “Presidential race is not a computer game,” adding that he had heard the appeals and would continue consultations.
Jonathan commended the youths for showing concern about the country’s future, describing patriotism and active civic participation as vital for national development.
He also called on young Nigerians to champion peaceful and credible elections, warning that flawed electoral processes discourage capable and honest citizens from participating in politics.
The former president expressed concern over Nigeria’s consistent low voter turnout, despite having one of Africa’s largest voting populations. Drawing from his experience as an international election observer, Jonathan said Nigeria records some of the poorest voter participation rates compared to other African and Asian countries.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission, to study the causes of voter apathy and improve public confidence in elections.
Jonathan further challenged Nigerian youths to participate actively in democracy by registering for voter cards and voting during elections instead of remaining passive observers.
He also lamented the negative perception and treatment of Nigerians abroad, blaming years of poor leadership and governance failures for the situation.
While appreciating the support from the youth groups, Jonathan maintained that he was yet to take any final decision on the 2027 presidential race, insisting that consultations would continue before any political move is made.
