Atiku Alleges Plot to Bar ADC from 2027 Poll, Warns Against Threat to Democracy

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that there are ongoing efforts by unnamed individuals within the ruling establishment to prevent the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from participating in the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Monday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku claimed he had received credible information about coordinated political and legal moves aimed at excluding the ADC from the ballot.

The former vice president described the alleged plan as an attack on Nigeria’s democracy, arguing that it forms part of a broader strategy to weaken the opposition and deny Nigerians the freedom to choose their preferred leaders.

According to him, the ADC has emerged as the strongest opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that attempts to frustrate the party’s participation would not succeed.

Atiku also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of focusing on political battles instead of addressing pressing national challenges such as insecurity, inflation, unemployment and economic hardship.

He further alleged that institutions expected to remain neutral were increasingly being drawn into partisan politics through litigation, administrative actions and political pressure.

Calling on the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society organisations and the international community to remain vigilant, Atiku urged them to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.

He maintained that no government has the constitutional power to determine which political parties Nigerians can vote for, stressing that elections should be decided at the ballot box rather than through judicial or administrative interference.

The statement comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with Atiku and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi adopting the ADC as the platform for a coalition seeking to challenge the ruling APC.
