Tinubu Extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s Tenure by Six Months

President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.

The extension follows the expiration timeline of Adeniyi’s first tenure extension, which was due to end on August 1, 2026. According to the Presidency, the additional six months will enable him to consolidate key reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, and ensure a smooth leadership transition within the service.

During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and facilitate the retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years of service.

Adeniyi joined the Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.

President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.

The Presidency said the extension is aimed at sustaining ongoing reforms and ensuring an orderly succession process within the Nigeria Customs Service.
