Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have recorded a major breakthrough against banditry, neutralising several armed criminals and destroying their hideouts along the Sokoto-Zamfara border.

A security source disclosed to journalists in Sokoto on Saturday that the operation targeted bandit enclaves located on elevated terrains around Dangulbi and Kurawa villages in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to the source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak officially on the operation, several bandits, including notorious kingpins, were killed during the offensive, while many others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

The operation, carried out on Wednesday, June 4, was conducted by troops of the 8 Division under Operation Fansan Yamma in collaboration with other security agencies and local vigilante groups.

“The troops engaged the criminals in a fierce battle, forcing them to retreat into forests in neighbouring states after suffering heavy casualties” the source said.

He added that the military recovered a number of weapons and motorcycles used by the fleeing bandits.

The source described the operation as a significant success, noting that the swift response, professionalism and courage displayed by the troops prevented what could have been a major security incident.

“The operation will continue as security forces intensify efforts to rid the area of criminal elements and ensure the safety of residents,” he said.

The latest success comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat banditry and restore peace in Sokoto State and the wider North West region.

Recently, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Sokoto State on Security Matters, Colonel Ahmad Usman rtd, alongside several residents, commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained offensive against bandits and the progress recorded in improving security across the state.
