The crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party PDP in Sokoto State have taken a new dimension following the latest development involving the dissolution of the Hon. Bello Goronyo led state executives by the party’s National Working Committee NWC reportedly led by Nyesom Wike.
In a press statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the party said it relied on Article 29(2)(b) of the PDP constitution to dissolve the current executive committees of the party in Sokoto State.
The NWC also announced the appointment of a new caretaker committee for the state, headed by Hon. Hayatu Tafida alongside fourteen others, to oversee the affairs of the party pending further developments.
The lingering discontent within the party is believed to have intensified after the Hon. Bello Goronyo PDP leadership in Sokoto reportedly rejected the Wike led leadership and refused to attend the convention that produced the new National Working Committee under AbdulRahman Mohammed.
However, in a swift political move, Hon. Umar Bature, who is seeking the position of National Organizing Secretary, was said to have mobilized other party members, including some former commissioners of former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
Political observers say the former governor, now Senator is believed to be backing the current Goronyo led executives, who still had time left in office, and encouraged them to remain in the PDP despite his defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Many political watchers in Sokoto were reportedly surprised that several core loyalists of the former governor remained in the PDP, fueling speculations over possible strategic interests.
Interestingly, one of the leading figures in the current push against the existing structure is said to be Hon. Umar Bature, once considered a close ally of Tambuwal. Sources within the faction also claim preparations for the new party headquarters have been concluded.
Others reportedly involved in the political realignment include former Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Dahiru Yusuf Yabo, and former Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Musa Girkau.
Observers across Sokoto State are now watching closely to see how the unfolding political drama within the PDP will shape the state’s political landscape.
