Dasuki Raises Alarm Over INEC Role, Champions Youth Inclusion in ADC
A member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, has raised serious concerns over the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as a growing threat to Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
Dasuki made the remarks on Wednesday in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State while officially receiving his membership card of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his Dogon Daji/Salah Ward.
The lawmaker accused INEC, under the leadership of Joash Amupitan, of allegedly siding with forces seeking to weaken opposition parties and impose a one-party system in Nigeria. He specifically faulted the commission’s decision not to recognize the David Mark-led leadership of the ADC, describing it as part of a broader plan to undermine democratic plurality.
According to Dasuki, such actions could pave the way for dominance by the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that Nigeria risks losing its competitive political space ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is about the soul of our democracy,” he said, urging Nigerians, civil society groups, and the international community to remain vigilant and defend democratic institutions.
The event also witnessed a remarkable political shift, as hundreds of supporters, including members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other parties, defected to the ADC.
Dasuki explained that his decision to leave the PDP, following his resignation in March, was due to the party’s prolonged internal crisis, which he said had weakened its ability to function effectively as a credible opposition.
He further declared a “new era of youth inclusion,” emphasizing his commitment to empowering young people within the political space. According to him, the ADC offers a platform that prioritizes youth participation in governance at all levels.
Youth groups present at the event echoed similar concerns about insecurity and economic hardship, stating that these challenges influenced their decision to align with the ADC.
