Sokoto’s Caliphate Air Welcomes First Two Aircraft Ahead of Launch

The newly purchased commercial airplane owned by the Sokoto State Government has arrived the Sultan Abubakar Sadiq lll International Airport Sokoto, marking a significant milestone in the government drive to improve regional air connectivity and stimulate economic growth.
The two Embraer ERJ-145LR regional jets, registered as 5N-SOK and 5N-SOL, arrived on Wednesday night at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, bearing the official Caliphate Air livery.
The aircraft, each with a seating capacity of 50 passengers, form the first batch of the airline’s planned initial fleet of three regional jets. A third aircraft is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
Designed for short-haul domestic operations, the ERJ-145LR was selected for its fuel efficiency, operational flexibility, and suitability for regional routes with moderate passenger demand.
Caliphate Air has already secured its Air Transport Licence (ATL and is currently completing the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) process with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The certification will include aircraft inspections, emergency evacuation demonstrations, and non commercial test flights before the airline is cleared for commercial operations.
Although owned by the Sokoto State Government, the airline will operate from its strategic base at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Its initial route network will connect Abuja, Sokoto, and Kano, with plans to expand services to Lagos and Port Harcourt after stabilising operations.
The launch of Caliphate Air is expected to boost economic activities across the Northwest by improving access for business travellers, investors, and tourists, while also enhancing cargo transportation for farmers and small-scale traders.
Commercial passenger and cargo operations are expected to commence in the second half of 2026, subject to the completion of all regulatory requirements.
