Gov. Lawal Commissions $200m Lithium Processing Plant in Zamfara, Promises Jobs, Industrial Grow

Governor Dauda Lawal has commissioned the $200 million Zamfara Lithium Mining and Processing Plant in Boko Village, Zurmi Local Government Area, describing the project as a major milestone in thep state’s drive towards responsible mining, industrialisation and economic development.

The facility, unveiled on Saturday, is a joint investment by ZAM Mining Company Ltd, Bima Mines Ltd, Jinlide Mining Co. Ltd and other partners. It is expected to boost local mineral processing, create jobs and position Zamfara as a key player in the global lithium value chain.

Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Lawal said the project reflects his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the state’s abundant mineral resources translate into tangible benefits for residents through transparent and sustainable management.

“Development comes when resources are managed efficiently and transparently, and government provides an enabling environment for investors to operate responsibly,” the governor said.

Lawal noted that for decades Zamfara had been recognised for its vast mineral wealth but had not fully benefited from it due to poor management and illegal exploitation.

“From the inception of this administration, we made a firm commitment to change the narrative of the solid minerals sector in Zamfara State from informality to organisation, from exploitation to value creation, and from lost opportunities to shared prosperity,” he said.

The governor stressed that the growing global demand for lithium, driven by renewable energy, electric vehicles and modern technology, presents a unique opportunity for Zamfara to expand beyond raw mineral extraction.

“Zamfara State cannot afford to remain only a source of raw minerals; we must become active participants in the entire value chain,” he added.

Lawal assured investors that his administration would continue to provide a conducive business environment by strengthening security, improving infrastructure and implementing policies that encourage sustainable investment.

“Our administration is committed to mining activities that respect the law, protect our environment, and provide direct benefits to our communities,” he said.

The governor also directed the operators of the mining plant to prioritise local employment, skills acquisition, environmental protection and corporate social responsibility to ensure host communities benefit directly from the investment.
