One person has been killed and an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) staff member abducted following an attack by suspected terrorists on Girkau village in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The attack reportedly took place in the early hours of Thursday September 10, 2026.
The state police spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the incident, identifying the abducted official as Bala Aladan, an INEC employee from Tambuwal Local Government Area.
A resident, Munir Auwal, said the attackers invaded the community while shooting sporadically and reportedly abducted an unspecified number of residents.
A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said security operatives had commenced search and rescue efforts and were tracking the attackers.
The source said investigations were underway to determine the precise number of casualties and abductees, urging residents to remain calm and assist security agencies with relevant information.
Rufai, however, said the attack occurred after residents had been evacuated from the area.
He confirmed that one person was killed and that the INEC staff member was abducted, adding that the police command had launched an investigation and deployed additional personnel to the affected community.
“Security agencies have been notified and are said to be on the ground. As of this morning, no further report has been received from the area” Rufai said.
