FG Urges Media, Security Agencies to Deepen Collaboration for National Stability

The Federal Government has called for closer cooperation between media organisations and security agencies, stressing that both institutions have critical responsibilities in safeguarding national peace, security and development.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal on Thursday during a National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in partnership with the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.

Idris said security agencies are tasked with protecting lives, property and the nation’s sovereignty, while the media serves as a vital link between government and citizens through information dissemination and public accountability.

According to the minister, stronger collaboration based on trust, professionalism and mutual respect would enhance national security efforts and boost public confidence in government institutions.

He noted that Nigeria continues to face various security threats, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime, misinformation and separatist activities. Despite these challenges, he said security forces have achieved notable successes through the rescue of abducted victims, the dismantling of terrorist hideouts and the disruption of criminal networks.

Idris added that the government is tackling the underlying causes of insecurity through economic reforms, educational initiatives, youth empowerment programmes and social intervention schemes.

The minister, however, cautioned journalists against publishing unverified reports, warning that misinformation could undermine national security operations and public trust.

Also speaking at the summit, NUJ President Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi emphasised the need for stronger cooperation between journalists and security agencies to advance democracy and protect national interests.

Representing the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole described the media as a strategic partner in modern security operations, urging journalists to promote patriotism and national unity while exercising caution in reporting sensitive security information.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Chido Onumah, disclosed that the Office of the NSA is developing a national security communication framework aimed at improving information sharing, verification processes and trust between the media and security institutions.
