Tinubu Highlights Fertiliser Reforms, Says Food Security Agenda Delivering Results

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outlined the achievements of his administration’s food security agenda, highlighting major gains recorded through the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) and the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (RH-FISP).

In a statement titled “Building Resilience for Food Security Through PFI & RH-FISP,” the President said his government had fulfilled its promise to make food security a central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda by supporting farmers, strengthening local production, and reducing dependence on imports.

Tinubu noted that global supply chain disruptions, rising fertiliser input costs, and conflicts in parts of the world posed significant risks to Nigeria’s agricultural sector. However, he said the government acted early to protect local fertiliser production and ensure the availability of critical inputs.

According to the President, the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative, now restructured under the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), secured more than 449,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser inputs as of May 2026, equivalent to about nine million bags. He added that the government remains on track to deliver 1.1 million metric tonnes of fertiliser this year, representing approximately 22 million bags.

Tinubu further disclosed that strategic contracting for key fertiliser inputs generated savings of ₦61.58 billion in 2026 alone, helping to make fertiliser more affordable for farmers nationwide.

The President also revealed that Nigeria now has over 90 operational fertiliser blending plants, which he described as the largest blending capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa. He said the development would boost local production, create jobs, and strengthen the country’s food system against external shocks.

On direct support to farmers, Tinubu said the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme is distributing 515,720 bags of locally produced fertiliser to 128,930 smallholder farmers across 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory for the current planting season.

He added that the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) is supporting modern agriculture through digital extension services, harmonised fertiliser application guidance, and targeted interventions for priority crops such as rice, maize, cassava, and soybean.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting farmers, increasing agricultural productivity, strengthening the agricultural value chain, and reducing pressure on food prices.

“We will continue to take practical steps to strengthen Nigerian agriculture and protect food security for every Nigerian,” Tinubu stated.
