PDP Sokoto Assembly Lawmaker, Randa Faces Uncertain Political Future

The gale of defections rocking the Sokoto State House of Assembly appears to be far from over, as a lone People’s Democratic Party PDP ranking member, Abdullahi Randa, is reportedly weighing his political future amid growing pressure.

At Wednesday’s plenary session, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, formally announced the defection of eight PDP lawmakers following the Assembly’s resumption from recess. Seven of the defectors joined the African Democratic Congress ADC while one Member representing Shagari Constituency defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Sources revealed that prior to the development, a meeting had been convened between the former Sokoto State Governor, and ADC Leader, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and the nine PDP lawmakers on Tuesday, where it was reportedly agreed that they should all submit their defection letters to the House the following day.

However, in a surprising twist, Hon. Randa, who represents Tureta Constituency, was absent during proceedings, reportedly citing illness.

His absence raised eyebrows, particularly as lawmakers are aware that defection letters can be read on the floor of the House even in absentia. His colleagues were said to have queried his absence.

Findings by GaskiyaCast suggest that Hon. Randa may be on the verge of defecting to the ruling APC, having allegedly been weighing his options ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources further claim that his political calculations are influenced by historical voting patterns, noting that he has often relied heavily on alignment with the ruling party in the state to clinch the Assembly seat.

Adding to the pressure, family ties are also reported to be playing a role, as his in-law who currently serves as Nigeria’s Ambassador is reportedly encouraging him to join the APC.

Tureta Local Government Area, which Hon. Randa represents, has traditionally been a stronghold of the PDP, making his next move particularly significant.

As political realignments continue to unfold, observers say all eyes are now on Hon. Randa, with the direction he takes likely to shape the dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
