The Kebbi State Government has donated the sum of Ten Million Naira to the parents of two sisters who allegedly died as a result of drug misapplication at the General Hospital in Zuru.

The tragic incident, involving the girls aged six and three, reportedly occurred on the 18th of this month under circumstances linked to alleged negligence by some nurses.

The two nurses accused in connection with the incident have been arrested and are currently in police custody in Birnin Kebbi, as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the deaths.

In a move to underscore its commitment to justice, the state government constituted a nine-man investigative panel headed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, which has since commenced its assignment.

Speaking during the presentation of the donation at the Emir’s Palace in Zuru, the Committee Chairman, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, said the gesture was aimed at supporting the grieving family.

“This donation is to assist the family in coping with the trauma of this tragic loss. It is not, and cannot be, a replacement for the lives lost,” he said.

“No amount of money can replace this irreparable loss, but we hope this gesture will show that the family is not alone and has not been neglected.”He added

The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi Mikailu Sami, urged the bereaved family to accept the incident as an act of God.

“You should see this as an inescapable act of Almighty Allah and remain steadfast in faith,” the Emir advised.

He commended Governor Nasir Idris for his swift response and concern over the incident.

“The Governor has demonstrated genuine compassion and commitment to justice by taking immediate action,” he said.

The monarch also called on healthcare workers to improve their professionalism.

“Health workers must embrace constant training and retraining. Negligence that endangers lives is completely unacceptable,” he warned.

Responding on behalf of the family, Barrister Garba Abubakar Shehu expressed appreciation to the state government.

“We are grateful to the Governor for this support and for ensuring that a thorough investigation is carried out so that such an incident does not happen again,” he said.

“Though we are deeply pained, we take solace in the belief that no one dies until their appointed time.” He added.

Meanwhile, the investigative panel has commenced sittings in Zuru, holding sessions at the General Hospital with key witnesses appearing before it.

Medical personnel, including the Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Thomas Gode, Medical Officer Dr. Mohammed Fakai, and nurses on duty during the period of admission, have all testified and were cross-examined.

The parents of the deceased, led by their father, Ibrahim Abdullahi Shuni, alongside other family members, also gave accounts of the events leading to the deaths.

As part of its proceedings, the committee also engaged hospital staff, where concerns were raised over communication gaps among personnel, which were identified as contributing factors requiring urgent attention.
