President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting religious harmony, interfaith dialogue, and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.
The President made the pledge on Saturday while receiving Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, at his residence in Abuja.
Tinubu said his government would continue to partner with religious leaders to foster peace and tolerance, stressing that interfaith dialogue remains a vital tool in addressing the country’s security challenges.
He commended the Catholic Church for its longstanding contributions to education, healthcare, and humanitarian services in Nigeria, recalling that he returned mission schools to their original owners during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting freedom of worship, improving national security through increased investment in the military, and empowering young people to prevent radicalisation and violent extremism.
Archbishop Gallagher, who is in Nigeria to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See, praised the country’s vibrant Catholic community and commended President Tinubu’s efforts to promote peace and strengthen ties with the Vatican.
He conveyed Pope Leo XIV’s appreciation for the President’s attendance at his inauguration and expressed optimism about deeper cooperation between Nigeria and the Holy See.
