The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB has commenced plans to establish “Second Chance” schools aimed at providing educational opportunities for women who dropped out of formal schooling.

This was disclosed by the Board’s Executive Chairman, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, in a statement issued on Thursday. He explained that the initiative is designed to target married women and young females across communities enabling them to acquire both formal education and practical vocational skills.

Tambuwal noted that the programme seeks to address poverty and reduce idleness by equipping beneficiaries with modern and traditional skills, while also advancing the education agenda of the Sokoto State Government under Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.

As part of the rollout, the SUBEB Chairman inaugurated a four-member committee chaired by Permanent Member IV, Hajiya Jamila Abdulkadir Dan’uti, to drive the initiative. The committee has already embarked on a study visit to Kebbi State to understudy similar programmes.

During the visit, the team was received by the Executive Secretary of Kebbi SUBEB, Alhaji Hassan Umar, alongside senior officials, who provided insights into the structure and implementation of Second Chance Schools in the state.

The delegation toured facilities in Kalgo Local Government Area and a centre at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, where they assessed operational models and best practices that could be adapted for Sokoto.

The planned schools are part of a collaboration between SUBEB and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) focusing on promoting girls’ education, particularly for those unable to complete their studies.

Officials of the host institutions, including education administrators and centre heads, also briefed the team on the management and day-to-day operations of the schools visited.

Other members of the committee include the Special Adviser to the SUBEB Chairman Malam Ahmad Umar Gidadawa Sokoto, and the Board’s Public Relations officer, Murtala Muhammad Danladi.
