Sokoto PDP Targets 4 Million New Members

The Peoples Democratic Party PDP in Sokoto State has commenced an electronic membership registration drive aimed at enlisting over four million new members ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative, which spans the state’s 244 council wards across 23 local government areas, is designed to strengthen the party’s grassroots support and enhance its electoral prospects. Both new and existing members are expected to be captured through the digital platform to ensure a credible and verifiable data base.

At a one day training session for coordinators in Sokoto, former State PDP Secretary, Kabiru Aliyu, revealed that the party is targeting at least 20,000 registrants per ward. He described the exercise as a strategic move to reposition the party and boost its chances in the next general elections.

Aliyu commended the PDP leadership at both state and national levels for initiating the programme, noting that it would significantly expand the party’s membership base and strengthen its structures.

Co-Chairperson of the registration committee, Zainab Dogon-Daji, said the training was aimed at equipping participants with the technical know-how required for the smooth conduct of the exercise. She added that similar training would be extended to ward level officials to ensure effective implementation across the state.

She highlighted that the electronic registration system would promote transparency, improve data management, and produce an accurate membership register, while urging residents to participate massively.

Also speaking, Dahiru Yusuf Yabo, a former governorship candidate and ex-Commissioner for Water Resources under former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, called on party members and residents to take part in the exercise to avoid disenfranchisement.

Other stakeholders, including Hayatu Tafida and Ibrahim Magaji Gusau, urged widespread participation, stressing that a large turnout would reinforce the PDP’s political strength in Sokoto.

Gusau criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, accusing it of misgovernance and worsening economic and security conditions since taking office in 2015.
