Reps Withdraw Own State Police Bill, Begin Consideration of Tinubu’s Proposal

The House of Representatives has withdrawn its constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police, choosing instead to consider a similar proposal submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, the Executive-sponsored bill seeking to amend the Constitution to provide for the creation of state police was presented and passed its first and second readings.

Following the readings, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for detailed examination and further legislative action.

The decision means the House has suspended work on its own version of the state police amendment in favour of the Executive’s proposal, which will now serve as the primary legislation under consideration.

The committee is expected to review the bill’s provisions and make recommendations before it is returned to the House for debate and possible passage.
