ADC Demands Independent Probe into Mary Habila’s Death, Accuses Tinubu Government of Cover-Ups

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for an independent investigation into the death of Ms. Mary Habila, who reportedly died at the private residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death raise serious questions of public accountability that require a transparent and independent inquiry.

According to the opposition party, the case goes beyond a private tragedy because it involves the residence of a serving cabinet minister.

“Every Nigerian life matters. But when a citizen dies in the home of a serving cabinet minister, the matter immediately transcends private tragedy and becomes a question of public accountability.”

The party questioned the circumstances leading to Habila’s death, asking why she was staying at the minister’s residence, what her official assignment was, and what investigators had uncovered so far.

ADC demanded that the investigation be conducted independently of the Executive, insisting that a full autopsy be carried out and its findings made public to restore public confidence.

“This inquiry must include a full autopsy to determine the exact cause of Ms. Habila’s death and a public report of its findings. This is the only way to ensure that justice is done and is seen to be done.”

The party also accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of shielding senior government officials whenever controversies arise, alleging that political loyalty often takes precedence over accountability.

ADC further called on Senator David Umahi to step aside from office pending the outcome of an independent investigation.

“The least that should be expected is that the Minister, namely Senator David Umahi, should immediately step aside from office pending the conclusion of an independent investigation.”

The party warned that failure to ensure an impartial investigation would reinforce the perception that the Tinubu administration prioritises protecting its officials over ensuring transparency.

The ADC extended its condolences to the family of Mary Habila, stating that they deserve the truth about the circumstances surrounding her death.
