Crack Emerges in Bafarawa Akida Group as Faction Backs Dan’iya for 2027

Fresh political realignments appear to be unfolding in Sokoto State following the emergence of a splinter faction within the Bafarawa Akida group, which has declared support for the governorship ambition of Hon. Munir Muhammad Dan’iya ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development became evident when members of the faction, led by a former Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Abubakar Sadik Sanyinna converged on the Sokoto State Secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to formally endorse the party’s governorship candidate and former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Hon. Munir Dan’iya, as their preferred choice for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement comes despite earlier reports that the Bafarawa Akida group had thrown its weight behind Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, who is seeking a second term under the All Progressives Congress (APC). The group’s initial position followed the decision of its grand patron and former Sokoto State governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, to support the collapse of the group’s structures into the ruling APC.
Notably, the delegation that visited the ADC secretariat was accompanied by two brothers of the former governor, a move observers say underscores growing divisions within the political movement.
Addressing party supporters, the former commissioner said the faction was at the ADC secretariat to demonstrate its unwavering support and solidarity with Hon. Dan’iya, assuring party leaders of its commitment to mobilising support and working for the success of the ADC at all levels.
Responding, the gubernatorial candidate, Munir Dan’iya appreciate the group for the endorsement and assured the group of accommodating the group in the party’s activities.
The latest development suggests emerging cracks within the Bafarawa Akida group and could reshape political alignments in Sokoto State as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
