The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has endorsed Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, for a second term in office, citing his efforts to improve infrastructure and transform the state’s transport sector.

The union made its position known on Wednesday when it presented Governor Lawal with an Award of Excellence at the Dome Pavilion, Government House, Gusau.

The NURTW delegation was led by the Chairman of the union’s Board of Trustees, Dr Najeem Usman Yasin, and included the National President, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, as well as other senior officials.

Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal said the recognition and endorsement demonstrated the positive impact of the partnership between his administration and the transport sector.

Lawal said his administration had prioritised the development of an efficient and safe transport system as part of efforts to improve the state’s economy and the welfare of residents.

“When we took leadership, we promised Zamfara State a rebirth. We knew an efficient, safe transport sector was essential for a thriving economy,” the governor said.

He said the government had distributed 50 subsidised mass transit vehicles to NURTW members to improve their livelihoods and ease transportation for residents.

Lawal also highlighted the renovation of the Zamfara State Council Secretariat as part of measures to provide transport workers with a more dignified working environment.

The governor described the visit by Najeem Usman Yasin as symbolic, noting that he was the first NURTW chairman in Zamfara State after the state’s creation in 1996.

“I am deeply humbled by the two honours bestowed on me today. First, I accept the Award of Excellence as a recognition of our efforts and a pledge to do more. Second, I am grateful for the endorsement for a second term from NURTW, a key grassroots group,” he said.

Earlier, Yasin said the union decided to honour Lawal after observing what he described as significant achievements recorded by the governor during his three years in office.

“We are in Gusau today to appreciate your efforts by presenting you with an Award of Excellence. We feel it is our duty as leaders of the union to find time to come and show the whole world what you have done,” Yasin said.

He described Governor Lawal as “a gift to Zamfara State,” saying the governor had transformed the state within three years and brought it closer to world standards.

Yasin subsequently announced the union’s endorsement of Lawal for the 2027 governorship election and urged NURTW members across the state to support his re-election.

“I want to, on behalf of the NURTW, endorse Governor Dauda Lawal for re-election and also call on all members of the union to support and work towards his re-election in 2027 for the continuation of the good works he has started,” he said.
