Eid al-Adha: Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar Declares Monday as First Day of Zul-Hijja1447AH

The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Monday May 18, 2026 as the first day of Zul-Hijja 1447AH following the sighting of the new crescent moon.
The declaration was conveyed in a statement signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.
According to the statement, the moon sighting marks the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah the final month in the Islamic calendar and a period regarded as highly sacred by Muslims across the world.
The Sultanate Council explained that the month is significant for the annual Hajj pilgrimage and the celebration of Eid al Adha, one of the most important festivals in Islam.
It added that Eid al Adha is expected to be observed on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, corresponding with the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, subject to official confirmation.
The Council called on Muslims to dedicate the holy period to prayers, acts of worship and supplications for peace, unity and national progress.
It also urged the public to follow announcements from the Sultanate Council and other recognised Islamic authorities concerning activities related to the season.
