The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State University (SSU) Branch, has given the Sokoto State Government a two-week deadline to fulfil its commitments on outstanding entitlements owed to academic staff.

The union disclosed this in a press statement jointly signed by the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Bello Musa PhD, and the Branch Secretary, Comrade Zulkarnaini Shehu on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following a congress meeting held to review its earlier resolution of August 24 and assess the government’s progress in addressing lingering issues concerning members’ entitlements. According to the union, the state government, through the Ministry for Higher Education, met with its representatives on September 7, 2026, after which both parties reached and signed an agreement that the union’s demands would be addressed within two weeks.

The union said the Ministry also promised to communicate its demands to the Visitor and Executive Governor of Sokoto State.

However, ASUU-SSU expressed concern over previous agreements which it said had not been fully implemented.

The union recalled that some of its demands were captured in an agreement reached with the government on March 4, 2024, while another agreement was reached on April 28, 2026, after the government requested a two-month period to resolve the outstanding issues.

ASUU-SSU said although the government had partially implemented the salary component of the ASUU/FGN Agreement 2025, other outstanding obligations remained unpaid.

The union specifically listed Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), third-party deductions, promotion arrears, arrears relating to the 25–35 per cent salary increment, and accumulated annual increment arrears among the unresolved issues.

“Consequently, the Congress resolved to take the offer as agreed with a time frame of two-week within which the government promised to address the union’s demands on concrete term,” the statement said.

ASUU-SSU warned that failure by the government to address the issues within the agreed two-week period would trigger industrial action capable of disrupting academic activities at the university.

“Failure to address the union’s demands as promised after the expiration of the two-week deadline, the union resolved to embark on an action that will disrupt all academic activities in the university including statutory meetings where our members are involved,” it said.

The union appealed to the people of Sokoto State to prevail on the government to honour its commitments, saying this would help sustain a harmonious industrial relationship at the university.

Among the issues ASUU-SSU expects the government to resolve within the two-week period are the full implementation of the salary component of the ASUU/FGN Agreement 2025, payment of outstanding EAA, remittance of third-party deductions, payment of 25–35 per cent salary increment arrears and accumulated promotion arrears.

The union concluded by expressing hope that the government would fulfil the promises made during the latest engagement.
