US Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 After Brief Illness
United States Senator Lindsey Graham, a senior Republican lawmaker representing South Carolina, has died at the age of 71 following what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.”
The announcement was made by his communications director in a statement released on Sunday.
Graham, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, was widely regarded as one of the Republican Party’s most influential voices on foreign policy and national security.
He served in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades and played a prominent role in shaping American positions on global security issues.
Just days before his death, Graham visited Kyiv, where he called on China to use its influence over Russia to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine. He argued that increased pressure from Beijing could encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter peace negotiations.
He also advocated stronger sanctions against Russia and countries purchasing Russian energy.
Graham was also a steadfast supporter of Israel and consistently defended its military campaign in Gaza, maintaining strong backing for the country’s actions throughout the conflict.
His office did not disclose further details about the illness that led to his death, while his family requested privacy during this difficult period.
