From Sokoto Prison, Kanu Terminates Ejiofor’s Services, Bars Him from Speaking for IPOB

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has formally ended the legal services of his long-time counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, directing him to immediately cease representing him, his family, or the organisation in any capacity.
In a letter dated July 22, 2026, and issued from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Kanu said the decision had earlier been communicated verbally, with the latest correspondence serving as formal written notice of the termination.
He also revoked all authority previously granted to Ejiofor to act or speak on behalf of IPOB, maintaining that the lawyer no longer has any legal or official mandate to represent the movement.
Citing the IPOB Code of Conduct, Kanu stated that only the group’s leader has the power to appoint, suspend, or remove principal officers unless such authority is expressly delegated. He argued that no committee, former office holder, or individual acting outside the code can lawfully retain or appoint legal representatives for the organisation.
Kanu further instructed Ejiofor to stop issuing press statements, granting media interviews, releasing publications, or making social media posts in the name of himself, his family, or IPOB.
He also directed the lawyer to withdraw from all pending legal matters in which he remains counsel on record and to refrain from presenting himself as Kanu’s legal representative before any court, institution, or public forum.
The IPOB leader equally warned Ejiofor against disclosing or using any confidential or privileged information obtained during the course of their professional relationship without his express written consent.
According to Kanu, any unauthorised disclosure of such information could constitute professional misconduct and may result in disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, as well as other legal consequences.
