MOON SIGHTING: Sultanate Council Urges Muslims to Look Out for Shawwal Crescent
The Sultanate Council Sokoto has called on Muslims across Nigeria to begin the search for the new moon of Shawwal 1447AH.
This directive was contained in a press release issued on March 17, 2026, and signed by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs.
According to the statement, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH, has been designated for the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal.
Muslims are therefore urged to observe the crescent and report any verified sightings to their nearest district or village heads for onward communication to Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
The Sultan is expected to make the official announcement marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr based on verified reports.
The council also prayed for Allah’s guidance and acceptance of the faithful’s acts of worship.
