Tambuwal Celebrates IBB at 85, Hails Legacy of Institution Building

Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has congratulated former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, on his 85th birthday, describing him as a distinguished elder statesman whose contributions to Nigeria’s development remain significant.

In a birthday message posted on his X account on Monday, Tambuwal joined Nigerians in celebrating the former military leader, noting that Babangida’s years of service were marked by bold decisions, far-reaching reforms and a strong commitment to institution building.

Tambuwal identified the establishment of Abuja as Nigeria’s Federal Capital as one of the defining legacies of the Babangida administration, noting that the relocation of the seat of government from Lagos to Abuja represented a major milestone in the country’s history.

According to him, Abuja has since grown beyond being a purpose-built capital to become a symbol of Nigeria’s unity and shared national identity.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives also highlighted the establishment and development of key institutions during Babangida’s administration, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, National Directorate of Employment, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Corporate Affairs Commission and National Broadcasting Commission.

He further acknowledged reforms carried out within Nigeria’s security and intelligence institutions during the period.

While recognising that Nigerians may have differing views about various periods of the country’s history, Tambuwal said Babangida’s influence on Nigeria’s political, economic and institutional development could not be overlooked.

“Whatever perspectives history may hold about different periods of our national journey, General Babangida’s imprint on Nigeria’s political, economic and institutional development remains undeniable,” he stated.

Tambuwal described Babangida, at 85, as a repository of experience and an important voice in Nigeria’s national life, particularly on matters concerning peace, unity and national development.

He added that the former Head of State’s continued engagement with national issues demonstrated that statesmanship extends beyond holding public office.

Tambuwal, on behalf of his family, wished Babangida good health, peace and strength, while praying for many more fulfilling years.

“Happy 85th Birthday, General IBB,” he said.
