The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has called on relevant authorities to ensure strict adherence to the rule of law in the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

In a press statement issued on Monday, August 31, 2026, and signed by its Secretary General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, mni, the Council said El-Rufai, like every Nigerian, is entitled to his fundamental rights and remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

The SCSN expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding his continued detention and what it described as the apparent difficulty in meeting his bail conditions.

The Council said such circumstances could be inconsistent with established legal procedures and constitutional safeguards.

According to the statement, the SCSN does not support or condone criminality in any form, but stressed that the pursuit of justice must itself be conducted justly.

“Actions perceived as arbitrary, politically motivated, or inconsistent with the rule of law risk undermining public confidence in state institutions and eroding the very fabric of democratic governance,” the Council said.

The Council urged the authorities to operate strictly within the Constitution and extant laws, ensuring that due process is followed at every stage.

It also called on the authorities to avoid actions that could be perceived as politically motivated persecution, while demonstrating commitment to fairness, transparency and the rule of law.

The SCSN further maintained that Nigeria’s unity and long-term stability depend on the credibility of its institutions and the confidence citizens have in them.

“Justice must not only be done but must be manifestly seen to be done,” the Council stated.

The Council called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and responsibility, stressing that justice should be applied consistently, impartially and lawfully to promote national cohesion and sustainable development.
