Reps Extend 2025 Capital Budget Deadline to December 31
The House of Representatives has approved a further extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
The extension was approved during Tuesday’s plenary following a motion sponsored by the House Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere.
Ihonvbere said the implementation of the capital budget had not been completed due to prevailing economic challenges.
The lawmakers subsequently accelerated consideration of the bill, passing it through first, second and third readings during the same sitting.
The latest extension marks the fourth time the National Assembly has adjusted the deadline for implementing the 2025 capital budget.
On December 23, 2025, the legislature approved a three-month extension, moving the deadline to March 31, 2026, following the repeal and re-enactment of the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts.
The deadline was later extended from March 31 to June 30 by the Senate and House of Representatives.
On June 15, the National Assembly again extended the implementation period from June 30 to September 30.
During the June extension, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the execution of capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act had yet to reach an optimal level.
With the latest approval, ministries, departments and agencies of government now have until December 31, 2026, to complete the implementation of the affected capital projects under the 2025 budget.
