2027: G100 Coalition Moves Closer to Consensus Candidate Against Tinubu

The G-100 opposition coalition has intensified efforts to select a consensus presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election, following the inauguration of key committees to strengthen negotiations among participating parties.

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Professor Sadiq Gombe, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the coalition’s Legal and Media Committees, noting that consultations among political leaders and presidential aspirants were progressing.

The coalition comprises the SDP, African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Among the prominent presidential aspirants reportedly being considered for the coalition’s consensus ticket are former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke and SDP presidential candidate Adewale Adebayo.

Gombe said discussions involving party leaders and the aspirants were ongoing, expressing optimism that significant progress would be recorded before the end of 2026.

He explained that the newly inaugurated Legal Committee, comprising national legal advisers of the participating parties, would examine relevant constitutional provisions, electoral laws and Supreme Court judgments to ensure the coalition’s activities comply with legal requirements and avoid potential litigation.

Similarly, the Media and Publicity Committee, made up of national publicity secretaries and campaign spokespersons, would coordinate the coalition’s communication strategy and develop unified messaging to communicate its objectives to Nigerians.

The SDP chairman said the coalition was being driven by concerns over the country’s economic difficulties and security challenges, stressing the need for opposition parties to unite behind a credible alternative to the incumbent administration.

He added that the alliance was committed to placing national interest above individual political ambitions as negotiations continued towards selecting a candidate capable of mounting a strong challenge in the 2027 presidential election.
