The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has provided humanitarian relief materials to victims of the fire disaster that recently ravaged the Old Market in Sokoto State.

The intervention is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to support communities affected by disasters and assist victims in recovering from the impact of such incidents.

Presenting the relief items, the Head of NEMA’s Sokoto Operations Office, Mr Tukur Abubakar, who represented the Director General of the agency, Mrs Zubaida Umar, said the intervention reflected the Federal Government’s concern for the affected persons and its commitment to supporting them during the difficult period.

Abubakar said the assistance was aimed at cushioning the immediate effects of the fire and helping the victims restore their livelihoods and return to normal economic activities.

He explained that the relief distribution followed a comprehensive assessment carried out by NEMA after the incident to determine the extent of the damage and identify the immediate needs of those affected.

He stressed that the relief items should not be considered compensation for losses incurred, but humanitarian assistance designed to alleviate the hardship caused by the disaster and support the victims’ recovery.

The intervention included food and non-food items, as well as building materials to meet some of the immediate needs of the beneficiaries and facilitate the rehabilitation of damaged properties.

The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and NEMA for the intervention, describing it as timely and significant, especially as the fire had disrupted their livelihoods.

They also commended the agency for acting on the findings of its post-disaster assessment, saying the assistance would help ease the economic burden caused by the incident and support their efforts to rebuild and resume their businesses.
