FG Declares October 1 Public Holiday for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary, describing the country’s human and natural resources as major assets capable of driving national prosperity.

He said Nigeria’s warmth, welcoming spirit and abundant human capital, coupled with the richness of its land, position the country as a significant force on the African continent.

The minister stressed the importance of peace and stability to national development, urging Nigerians to emulate the country’s founding fathers by demonstrating patriotism and commitment to nation-building.

“Peace and stability are necessary conditions for the development of any nation,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He added that Nigerians should remain hopeful about the country’s future and view their diversity as a source of strength.

“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.

The minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to pursue measures aimed at improving citizens’ welfare, strengthening national security and enhancing public safety.

He urged Nigerians to use the Independence anniversary to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

“Happy 66th Independence Anniversary Nigeria,” the minister said.
