Atiku Reaffirms Pledge to Restore Fuel Subsidy, Disowns Aide’s Contrary Statement

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring fuel subsidy if elected, saying an earlier statement by one of his aides did not represent his position.
Atiku made the clarification while hosting the leadership of Osun State structure of the ADC at his residence in Abuja.
The former Vice President said he had received calls from Nigerians seeking clarification over an apparent contradiction between his position on subsidy removal and a statement attributed to one of his aides.
“So many Nigerians have been calling to say that one of my aides had contradicted me in statement as far as subsidy is concerned. I want to repeat categorically that when I said I will return subsidy, I will.”
Atiku argued that Nigeria has sufficient resources to cater for the welfare of its citizens, insisting that the aide who made the contrary statement was not speaking on his authority.
“Nigeria is rich enough to look after the welfare of its citizens. Therefore, let it be clearly stated that he was not speaking on my own authority.”
He further criticised the impact of fuel subsidy removal, arguing that the policy had worsened poverty among Nigerians.
“The removal of subsidy has driven more Nigerians into poverty than at any other time in the history of this country.”
According to Atiku, the welfare of citizens remains a fundamental responsibility of government, alongside ensuring the security of the country.
“The fundamental responsibility of the government is the welfare of its citizens. Two, I’ll make sure we secure this country.”
The ADC presidential candidate also accused the ruling political establishment of stealing election and subsequently undermining the Nigerian economy.
“We are competing with thieves. They stole election. Now they have stolen economy. They have stolen everything.”
Atiku’s remarks come amid renewed debate over fuel subsidy policy ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ADC candidate maintaining that his administration would prioritise the welfare and economic wellbeing of Nigerians.
