Amnesty International Condemns Killing of Islamic Preacher in Katsina

Amnesty International has condemned the killing of renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, by gunmen in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State.

The cleric was reportedly shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen on Monday as he stepped out of his house to attend his usual evening preaching session.

In a statement condemning the incident, Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to immediately launch an effective investigation into the killing and ensure that those suspected of being responsible are brought to justice.

The organisation described the killing as a disturbing incident, particularly given the late cleric’s commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and understanding among religious communities.

According to Amnesty International, Sheikh Masussuka consistently used his preaching to encourage cooperation, interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence among Muslim faithful and other religious communities.

He was also known for speaking against violent extremism and radicalisation.

The rights organisation further disclosed that the late Islamic cleric had faced threats to his life and intimidation throughout his lifetime.

Amnesty International urged the authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding his killing are thoroughly investigated and that justice is served.

The killing has raised concerns over the safety of religious leaders and the need for stronger measures to protect individuals who promote peace and religious understanding in Nigeria.
