All 23 Local Government Chairmen of Sokoto State Orders to Relocate to Councils

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has directed all the 23 local government chairmen in the state to relocate to their respective council areas as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and improve service delivery.

The governor gave the instruction when he received the chairmen on a traditional Sallah homage at the Government House in Sokoto, stressing that effective leadership requires physical presence within the communities being governed.

He explained that the move is intended to bring government closer to the people and enable council leaders to better understand and respond to the challenges facing residents at the local level. According to him, the long-standing practice of administering local governments from the state capital is no longer acceptable.

Governor Aliyu noted that living among the people would help the chairmen consolidate ongoing development efforts and enhance accountability in the management of council affairs. He therefore urged them to take a more proactive role in overseeing activities within their jurisdictions to accelerate development and improve public services.

The governor also disclosed that the state government is considering plans to either recover existing official residences across the 23 local government areas or construct new ones. He said this would provide suitable accommodation for council chairmen and key staff, thereby creating a more conducive working environment.

Speaking earlier, the Sokoto State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Alhaji Abba Shehu Tambuwal, assured the governor of the chairmen’s commitment to supporting the administration’s development agenda.

He added that they would continue to collaborate with traditional institutions, community stakeholders, and security agencies to address local challenges and promote peace, stability, and sustainable growth across the state.
