Sokoto Declares Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Public Holiday to Mark 1st Muharram 1448 AH
The Sokoto State Government has declared Tuesday, 16th June 2026, corresponding to 1st Muharram 1448 AH, as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the new Islamic year.
In a statement issued from Government House, Governor Ahmed Aliyu announced that the holiday is aimed at enabling Muslims across the state to observe and celebrate the commencement of the Islamic New Year.
The Governor called on citizens to use the occasion for prayers and reflection, especially seeking divine intervention to address the insecurity affecting parts of the state and other regions of Nigeria.
He described insecurity as a major challenge hindering national development, stressing that both federal and state governments are actively supporting security agencies in their efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.
According to him, tackling insecurity requires collective responsibility, urging all patriotic citizens to contribute in their own capacity toward restoring peace and stability.
Governor Aliyu further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continuously supporting security agencies to curb criminal activities in the state.
He also encouraged Muslims to use the Islamic New Year period for sober reflection, self-assessment, repentance, and renewed dedication to righteous living, noting Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
The Governor extended his goodwill message to the Muslim community, wishing them a peaceful, prosperous, and rewarding Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
