Dan Gulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State has come under fresh attack by armed bandits, barely two days after a deadly raid that claimed 17 lives.
Residents said the attackers invaded the village on Tuesday morning, arriving on motorcycles and firing sporadically as frightened villagers fled for safety.
Sources within the community alleged that more than 20 people were killed during the latest assault, while several houses were burnt and an unspecified number of residents remain unaccounted for.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the village at about 8:00a.m, targeting residents gathered in public places before moving through parts of the community unchallenged.
“They were shooting everywhere. People ran into nearby bushes and forests to escape,” a resident said.
The renewed attack follows a similar incident on Sunday when bandits riding on over 150 motorcycles reportedly killed 17 people, including visitors who had returned home for the Eid el Kabir festivities, and looted dozens of shops.
The latest violence has deepened concerns over the security situation in the area, with residents urging authorities to take decisive measures to prevent further attacks.
When contacted by Daily Trust Newspaper, the spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said that security operatives had been deployed following a distress call received from the area.
He said the command was awaiting a comprehensive report from personnel dispatched to the affected community.
