Suspected Insurgents Attack APC Governorship Candidate Gubio’s Convoy in Borno

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, along the Maiduguri–Damasak Road.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday in the Kareto general area of Mobbar Local Government Area, as Gubio and members of his entourage were returning to Maiduguri from Damasak, where they had attended a “thank you” visit.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident, with the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, telling Channels Television by telephone that the attack occurred but that there were no casualties among members of the entourage.

A local source familiar with the incident said the suspected insurgents planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the highway. One of the armoured security vehicles in the convoy reportedly ran over the device, caught fire and was damaged.

According to the source, no member of the convoy was injured or killed in the explosion.

Another source said the suspected insurgents also opened fire during the incident, but security personnel attached to the convoy responded and successfully repelled the attackers.

The attack reportedly caused panic among members of the convoy before the security personnel brought the situation under control.

As of the time of filing this report, Gubio had not issued an official statement confirming or providing further details about the incident.
