Shettima Urges ECOWAS Leaders Not to Alter Constitutional Term Limits
Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on leaders of West African countries to uphold constitutional democracy by resisting any attempt to manipulate presidential term limits, describing good governance as the strongest safeguard against political instability and unconstitutional changes of government.
Speaking at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Lungi, Sierra Leone, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and regional peace while addressing the theme, “Future of Regional Integration in West Africa.”
He stressed that lasting development across the region depends on peace, security, and stable democratic institutions.
Shettima noted that beyond military coups, poor governance and the failure to meet citizens’ expectations often fuel political unrest and mass protests capable of undermining constitutional order.
The vice president also endorsed the ECOWAS Compact for the Future of Regional Integration, describing it as a strategic roadmap that reflects the shared aspirations of West Africans and aims to strengthen regional cooperation in security, economic growth, and digital connectivity.
He further reiterated Nigeria’s support for the establishment of a regional counter-terrorism force and the strengthening of the ECOWAS Standby Force to improve intelligence sharing, joint security operations, and preventive diplomacy across West Africa.
