June Becomes Deadliest Month as Bandit Violence Worsens in Sokoto
By GaskiyaCast
June marked one year since the sharp escalation of banditry related violence in Sokoto State, where armed bandit attacks and insurgent activities have intensified since July 2025.
Over the past 12 months, more than 900 people have reportedly been killed in banditry related incidents across the state more than double the number of fatalities recorded during the preceding 12 month period.
Violence intensified further in June as armed bandits engaged security forces in repeated clashes while carrying out deadly attacks on civilians. One of the most devastating incidents occurred on June 6 in Tudu Village Isa Local Government Area, where 13 farmers were reportedly killed.
The attack raised fresh concerns after reports indicated that the assailants were operating under the command of Kachalla Chimmo, a notorious bandit leader whom Nigerian military authorities had previously announced was killed in December 2025. Similar claims about the deaths of prominent bandit leaders have been made in the past but were later questioned after the individuals allegedly resurfaced.
The group is believed to operate from the Sububu Forest, a major stronghold for armed groups and a strategic corridor linking Sokoto and Zamfara states, facilitating the movement of fighters, weapons, and supplies.
Overall, the surge in banditry-related attacks made June the deadliest month ever recorded in Sokoto State, underscoring the worsening security situation despite ongoing military operations.
